Belvedere
mansion

had a preview a spectacular property in an exclusive enclave of
Tiburon where the seriously rich live & play. The tycoons
fly in to work and land on the helipads atop office buildings of Downtown San
Francisco across the bay.

The 12,000-square-foot Blanding mansion
at 440 Golden Gate Ave., which has 360-degree views of San Francisco, the
Golden Gate Bridge and Angel Island, sits on more than an acre of land.
The mansion was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. It has bronze gates designed by Hearst Castle architect
Julia Morgan, 15-foot-high ceilings in the foyer, a wraparound veranda with
Corinthian columns, bronze sconces and teak decking on the southern, eastern
and western exposures. The estate was built in the late 1800s by C.O.
Parry, a pioneer Belvedere official, and was purchased by Gordon Blanding, a
San Francisco attorney, around 1900. After the 1906 earthquake, the
Blandings lived there full time because their San Francisco home was
destroyed.
Friedland, 57, founded Vancouver-based Ivanhoe Mines, which has spent
more than $400 million to develop a southern Mongolian discovery that could
become one of the world's largest copper and gold mines.
Friedland and his wife, Darlene, spent nine years and more than $32 million
renovating the house, which was bought for in 1995.
The record for a Northern California home is believed to be a $52.5
million sale in Woodside in 2000, according to published reports.
The new owners won't have to worry about a tax bill. Property taxes are
waived because of the historic designation.
This retreat is conveniently located half an hour
outside San Francisco but its unique history and attention to luxury and
details around the world make this offering especially unique for the
seriously rich who value their privacy and enjoy fresh air and escape for
calm from the global world. An international airport
allows for travel within 24 hours from any world capital in the world.
This property has been updated to current earthquake standards.
The 12,000-square-foot designated historic landmark has an indoor/outdoor
sound system and a panic room, and it sits on some of the priciest land in
Marin County, more than $10 million an acre, says the listing broker.
(Brokers say Belvedere has better weather than its surroundings, and -- go
figure -- when we visited the sun was shining here while the rest of the
area was foggy.) Other selling points include neighbors like venture
capitalist Tom Perkins, panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and the
Golden Gate Bridge and a wraparound veranda with Corinthian columns and teak
decking. The home's landmark status also gives it tax benefits, so property
taxes are currently $28,000 a year.
Locksley Hall, Belvedere, Calif.
The owner spent $5.5 million on the 1.2-acre property in 1995, and then
nine years and about $32 million renovating the 1895 house. He
has painstakingly restored the estate to its finest
splendor and yet retained most of the historical and architectural interior
and exterior detailing of this unique Landmark house which is exempted from
property taxes under Mills Act.

Antique paving stones from China create interesting
paths and steps throughout the gardens lead to a lawn, a rose garden,
bronze balustrades, and a custom designed bronze fountain that can be
accessed also from the Great Room and a Guest Suite.

Descend to a Burmese teak beamed Pergola leading
to the pool with Indonesian Batu-Hijau stone lining, flamed granite coping
and electric pool cover. A Pool House with Sauna, Steam
Bath/Shower with Fossil Stone coping, mosaic walls and floors, seashell wall
sconces and marble countertop, complete with indoor/outdoor Sound Systems
Fountain/Spa control and Telephone Points. A spacious hot-tub with Fossil
Stone coping is a peaceful spot to enjoy the incredible views of San
Francisco skyline and watching the sail boats go by. Various spots in the
garden offer serene setting and total privacy. Landscaping by Stephen Suzman
Design has imported exotic, specimen plants, flowers, and matured trees from
